KinectUs Safety Tips
The safety and well being of our community is extremely important to us. Please review the following safety information prior to using KinectUs™.
Built-In Safety Features
KinectUs™ provides a number of safety and privacy features:- Locations are not displayed on maps and distance information is generalized.
- Only people who mutually select each other are connected to chat.
- KinectUs™ provides an integrated chat function for safer messaging.
- Kinections automatically expire (this resets control by again requiring mutual selection).
- Facebook® profile links may be disabled anytime (and are initially set to off).
Profile Information
Be careful about the content you include in your KinectUs™ profile:- Never include any sensitive, personal or contact information.
- If you are uncomfortable sharing your Facebook® profile link, you may disable this feature in the profile editor.
Browsing & Selecting
- Be cautious if someone doesn’t clearly show their face in their photo or if their profile content is limited.
- If the person has enabled their Facebook® profile link, review it carefully. Their profile may be fake if they recently joined, they have few friends, their picture appears fake or if their profile content is limited or just sounds too good to be true.
- Only select someone if you know them or if you feel comfortable after viewing their profile.
- When in doubt, don’t select that person.
Chatting
If you both select each other and a connection is successful:- Use the built-in chat window to communicate and make your plans. Don’t share personal contact information such as your phone number, home address or your location information.
- Be cautious of scammers who might send a link to a third-party website, ask you to chat outside of KinectUs™, solicit help or money, seem overly eager to meet, etc. For additional information on how you can protect yourself, please visit OnGuardOnline.gov.
- Chat and get to know the person before meeting. Ask for any public information or additional information that they can share to help you assess their credibility.
- When in doubt, stop chatting and delete that person from your Kinection list or simply let the Kinection expire.
Meeting
- Meet in a busy, public venue like a coffee shop or restaurant.
- Let a friend or family member know where you are going, with whom you are meeting and when you will return.
- Take your phone and use its location-sharing feature to share your location with a trusted friend or family member until you return home.
- Don't accept an offer to be picked up - you should never get into a vehicle with someone you are meeting for the first time or don't fully trust. Instead, use secure transportation such as your car, a taxi or public transportation to get to the venue. If you walk, ensure that you safely part ways afterwards or consider having a friend walk you home.
- Consider inviting some friends with you to the venue.
- When in doubt, simply end things and ask a friend or an employee of the venue to help you get home safely.
